It starts here
A fist and a pencil, drawn into one mark. I wrote the name as a question on the first page, It starts here?, then worked the mark out in pencil, on a grid and in ink.

01The fist on its pencil point, inked in brush pen and traced for the screen.
A question, with a pencil in its fist.
The first page is mostly objects and words: a quill, an inkwell lettered INK, a megaphone, a pencil with its point snapped off, and a tall fist hatched until it becomes a pencil. Across the top: It starts here?

The fist on the pencil.
On the next pages the fist sits on the pencil like a cap, then the two become one outline. Four large studies hold the main directions: a tall fist on a pencil, a rounded fist with a speech tail, the same squared off, and a hatched, angular fist.

Fingers as blocks, the point as a triangle.
Then the hand is rebuilt from rectangles: four finger blocks, a thumb laid across them, an outline cut to an octagon or a shield, and a pencil point tried serrated, stepped and plain. Two notes in the margin: fill here is fine? and remove this?

Six inkings, laid over each other.
Six of the studies were inked in brush pen, one mark to a sheet. Laid one over another, the six show what every version kept.
Down to sixteen pixels.
On the first page I wrote single color. Here the inked marks run from sixteen pixels up, on paper and reversed out of the ink.

Two directions went on to the screen.
